Software Development Certification

To attain certification as a software development professional, the process is a little different than that of earning a degree. To begin with, these two types of educational programs are not equivalent to one another. Certification programs tend to be shorter, less comprehensive, and more targeted than associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Secondly, software development certifications are given out with very specific professional objectives in mind. This means that they train students in certain skill sets that translate to real-world, on-the-job scenarios. In a manner of speaking, you might say that a certification for software development is more job-oriented, while a degree is more education-oriented. Note that this is a generalization and not a rule.

Who enrolls in software development certification programs? One large category is students culled from among software professionals. These are people who have already established careers in the industry but want to gain more specialized knowledge about software development. Indeed, certain categories of software development certifications that are geared towards these professionals even state that exam-takers must have a year or two of professional experience. Oftentimes, these students take certification exams in order to fulfill a prerequisite for some position that they’re interested in taking. Another group is students who are complete beginners. In this case, they are interested in pursuing introductory software development certifications and quickly entering the IT field. Though they will not qualify for anything beyond entry-level software development positions, these programs are still a great way to get into the industry.
